Continuity in film and TV

According to the dictionary the meaning of the word continuity is "the unbroken and consistency or operation of something over time".
Another transition of continuity is the "maintenance of continuous action and self consistent detail in the various scenes of the film or broadcast".

As a make-up artist or hair stylist working in a film set, music video, TV show or a commercial, it is  important to be able to recreate the same look for the next shooting day. For example on a film set they were shooting a  scene where the character had a cut and then it was time to stop shooting for the day, the next shooting day the makeup artist has to make sure that the cut is at the same place and looks exactly the same as the previous shooting day.

To be able to maintain continuity as a make-up artist one should have to  create notes on which product to use and step by step instructions on how to recreate the look. Also its important for them to take picture so that they can be able to see the placement of everything and what it looks like.

Its not always easy to maintain continuity, for example, if one is doing a messy hair look, it's tricky to recreate the exact same messy look. Also sometimes  a scene is recreated after a long period of time and some of the props used are no longer available.

It is good to always have  a back up to make sure that there is more than one product in case a product goes missing or  is damaged.
